Bias

Module
  1. Main Input Connect any audio or CV source to this input.
  2. -5V Output Copy of the input signal biased by -5V.
  3. -2V Output Copy of the input signal biased by -2V.
  4. -1V Output Copy of the input signal biased by -1V.
  5. +1V Output Copy of the input signal biased by +1V.
  6. +2V Output Copy of the input signal biased by +2V.
  7. +5V Output Copy of the input signal biased by +5V.

Overview

The Bias module biases an audio or CV signal by adding or subtracting a voltage.

This is the easiest way to convert between unipolar and bipolar signals, or to transpose a pitch by 1 or 2 octaves.

The following figure shows the +5V output when a sine wave from a LFO is patched into the In jack:

To use this module, connect any signal into the In jack, and connect the appropriate output to another module. Each output applies a different bias to the input, and they can all be used simultaneously.

Here are a few ways the module can be used:

  • Convert a bipolar signal (-5V to 5V), such as a LFO, to unipolar (0V to 10V) with the +5V output, as shown in the figure above.
  • Convert a unipolar signal (0V to 10V), such as an ADSR, to bipolar (-5V to 5V) with the -5V output.
  • Transpose the keyboard’s pitch output up or down by 1 or 2 octaves with the +1V, +2V, -1V or -2V outputs.
  • Change a Classic VCO’s linear FM timbre by biasing the signal connected to its FM input.

The In jack is normalled to 0V, so the outputs can be used as fixed voltage sources when nothing is connected into the input.

If you also need to change the amplitude of the signal, use the Bias module in conjunction with the Scale module.
