Ragnar Grippe

Who is Ragnar Grippe?

Grippe began studying the cello at the Royal Music Conservatory in Stockholm at the age of 14. Electronic music rapidly caught his attention, and in the early 1970s he moved to Paris, which was then the epicenter of experimental electronic music, to study at the GRM (Groupe de Recherches Musicales) with figures such as Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry. During this formative period, in close contact with the French avant-garde, he worked on modern dance and experimental music projects.

Ragnar Grippe went on to compose extensively for film and television. His best-known work, the theme for the Jönssonligan film series, is known by heart across three generations of Swedes. Starting with the release of Sand on the cult label Shandar, Grippe has remained a prolific composer, releasing many albums such as Lost Secrets, Requiem, Film Noir, No Comment, Signorum Amor, Cold Numbers, and many others.

Drawing on his classical training and influences from electroacoustic and electronic music, Grippe’s music is a unique blend of genres, forms, and soundscapes with a particular emphasis on sound design and spatialization. From tape loop machines and early analog synthesizers to the digital synthesizers of the 1980s and computer-based music, technology has always been central to his practice.

Over the past 50 years, his works have been performed worldwide in high-profile venues such as La Scala in Milan and Espace Cardin in Paris. His recent projects include a collaboration with light artist Tobias Rylander.

Ragnar Grippe has been a long-time user and collaborator of AAS. He has composed the pieces on this page using AAS instruments exclusively.
